Karen Hyland — fresh off of hosting a shindig for Democratic contender for governor Ralph Northam — has been recruited to run in HOD-28 for the open seat left by retiring Speaker Bill Howell, according to the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star:

British Petroleum?  Owning an Irish pub?  Mind boggled…

…but returning to sobriety for a moment, J. Brian’s Taproom used to be covered in old Ronald Reagan and Robert F. Kennedy paraphernalia.  By covered, I mean lacquered — you couldn’t turn your head without seeing something awesome from either Kennedy’s 1968 presidential run or Reagan’s 1980 and 1984 presidential run.

In short, if you were a good Catholic?  This was a good bar.

Then it all got replaced with Red Sox junk.

Now of course, there are two remaining Reagan and RFK posters above the door as you leave the pub and head into the dining room.  At least, there were… and J. Brian’s does have a glorious “no Budweiser” policy before it was cool.

Still… at least I know where to file my complaint about all the Reagan and RFK stuff coming down.  That is, unless, Tommy Mitchell wanted all of his old gear back… in which case, I’ll blame him instead.

Either way, HOD-28 is another packed race, with a local pastor in southern Stafford also running for the Democratic nod.  Three candidates — Milde, Thomas, and Stimpson — are either exploring or announced for the Republican nomination contest.

Please don’t kick me out of J. Brian’s the next time I’m there.  *sad*

UPDATE:  …and a very important update.  A reader helpfully points to this from the J. Brian’s Taproom Facebook page circa 2002:

Ah, the Irish Brigade!  Long a favorite for Fredericksburg natives, now an empty shell… and even though Green Orbitz The Colonial Tavern tried to misappropriate the name to much protest from Virginia’s favorite drinking town with a history problem, this helpfully clears (most) of it up.

I still miss all the paraphernalia, though.  Also miss Paul Akers at the helm of the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star.  Also miss what old town Fredericksburg used to be before someone decided making it look like a poor man’s version of Old Town Alexandria was a good idea.

…bah, a conversation better held over a pint of Guinness.

  • I think the biggest issue is simple – these polls only include folks who answer them. I think most Stewart supporters, as with most Trump supporters, aren’t going to tell a random stranger how they’re voting.

I’ll agree with you. I was knocking on doors for Team Gillespie in Shenandoah County, and got an awful lot of refusals – more than usual. Kinda led me to know something wasn’t right, although everyone else said they were supporting Ed.

Except it’s not just Virginia. Polls in Georgia showed a Democrat win for weeks.
