Longtime conservative veteran and architect of the Tom Garrett and Mark Peake campaigns Mr. George Goodwin has made it official, announcing his bid for the 56th House of Delegates seat after Delegate Peter Farrell announced he would not be seeking re-election.

Today, I am announcing my candidacy for the Republican nomination for the 56th House District.
After hearing Delegate Peter Farrell state his intent not to run for a 4th term, I heard the call. I intend to continue Peter’s outstanding representation of the people of the 56th District and began an outstanding legacy of my own.
That legacy will be built on my belief in the rights of the unborn, Virginians’ 2nd amendment rights, a strict reading of the Constitution, the power of individual self-determination, and the unlimited potential of a free market economy.
From my experience at the local level of government, I also firmly believe that you don’t legislate what you don’t appropriate. It is less than meaningless to go to Richmond and tell your constituents that you didn’t vote for tax increases, if you voted for unfunded mandates that caused local officials to raise your taxes to pay for your decisions. A tax increase is a tax increase.
I have lived in this District my entire life. I know and have lived its values. Serving as both a Legislative Advisor for Congressman Tom Garrett and Senator Mark Peake, I understand how laws are made and, just as importantly, I understand how they should not be made and how they ultimately affect Virginians.
I look forward to sharing my views and hearing the opinions of the people of the 56th District. As that happens, I am confident they will agree that I am the person best suited to represent our interests in Richmond.
Unfunded mandates on localities? Goodwin certainly gets it.
Given Goodwin’s immense background both with regards to local government where he has served as Louisa County Planning Commissioner, his knowledge of the political sphere in both VA-05 and VA-07, and his 33-year career in the intelligence community, Goodwin’s professional experience matches quite well with his rural background and deep Virginia roots.
One really couldn’t ask for a better match for the district that George Goodwin.
Louisa attorney and Cuccinelli ally Graven Craig has also announced his intention to run on Charlottesville’s Afternoon Constitutional with Joe Thomas for the newly opened HOD-56 a few hours after Farrell made his decision not to run public.
The eventual winner of the GOP contest will have to square off against Democrat Lizzie Drucker-Basch in the November general election.
