Let’s boil this down, shall we?
The Democrats are going to stop at nothing to tear down Donald Trump, having been locked out of the Kaba’a and driven away from their Mecca in Washington.
With a fanatical devotion that only a secular religion can command, they are going to throw everything possible at the Trump administration, block every appointment, and allow their thousands of bureaucrats to slow and stymie the operations of the federal government in order to run the clock out and prevent Trump from doing any lasting damage (or achieving any salient good).
Insofar as the dismissal of FBI Director Comey goes? Of course something is moving behind the curtain that spurred Trump into action. So be it — Comey serves at the pleasure of the executive office.
Likewise, if Flynn actually met with the Russian ambassador… who cares? There’s nothing illegal in that vis a vis the Trump administration.
The problem here is that the Democrats see the endgame: impeachment and imprisonment. Now they are simply backfilling the endgame with “facts” — all in an effort to hang the bastards (whomever they may be).
…but on the political right, even among us #NeverTrump types? Let’s not pretend for a moment that these self-appointed crusaders are actually fighting to restore an honorable middle. To the contrary, they are just as if not more dangerous than the nationalist right.
The false dichotomy of “if you’re not with us, you’re against us” is a pretty poisonous thing to take in, and very difficult to expunge once taken in. If you’re not a nationalist, you must be a globalist. If you’re not a conservative, you must be a liberal. If you aren’t a socialist, you must be a corporatist. Ad infinitum…
Rather, there is a middle ground to be defended here. Federalism against the twin vices of nationalism and globalism. The classical liberalism of the founders between the two vices of socialism and corporatism. Liberals and conservatives are indeed two sides of the same classical liberal coin, but the extremist interpretations of the same — progressives on the left; populists on the right — have to be fought.
Conservatives should be very wary with regards to the process as this saga unfolds. Surely, the political left is going to leverage any anti-Trump sentiment as a “useful idiot” for their own purposes and designs — not because they believe what we believe, but rather because they believe the other vice at the opposite ends of liberty’s golden mean.
Rather, conservatives have a moral duty to allow the process to play out, not to hang Trump in the public square with special investigators merely 100 days after the man has been sworn in. To tamp down the nationalists in our ranks (or drive them out in due course), resist the progressive drive towards socialism, and find liberals of like mind who are willing to preserve and fight for the honorable middle.
One gets the sense that Americans are being whipped into a frenzy against one another, despite living in what many would term a golden age. Never before have we had as many luxuries and diversions at our fingertips as we do today… and yet the really hard questions of expanding prosperity and meaningful work to millions of others are being dodged in favor of cui bono? and all the other troglodyte questions that the snouts huddled around the federal trough ask.
…and above all else? Be bold in determining the new course of conservatism. We’re at a tipping point where terms and ideas are being redefined and applied — and opportunists abound as folks whose postmodern lives feel so utterly meaningless are are pushed to identify themselves through association and mass movements.
At least, that’s how it worked in Europe… in the 1930s… and yes, they are counting on a public who will emote first and reflect later to do the bidding of a handful of elites — both sides.
Don’t be one of them, is all.
As for Trump and Flynn? The rest of us should patiently wait for the slow wheels of justice to operate and come to their own conclusions, and be wary of attempts (oblique or otherwise) by the administration to blunt such efforts. Certainly we have an open and free public square, and the most they have been able to come up with through FOIA requests and press statements is… not much.
Let’s remember what separated Watergate from the today as well: (1) crack investigative reporting from Bob Woodward, and (2) someone on the inside willing to talk. We are — at the moment — missing both. So be patient… time bears all things to light.
